Business cards with QR code

Business cards with QR codes combine a printed card with digital content. Instead of typing a website, noting a phone number, or searching for a social media profile, the other person can scan the code with their smartphone and go directly to the linked destination. This could be your website, your portfolio, an appointment booking, a digital business card, or a vCard to save your contact details. This is particularly practical for client meetings, events, trade shows, and personal conversations when information needs to be quickly transferred from paper to a smartphone. QR codes are therefore often used as an addition to classic business cards, rather than completely replacing the printed card.

What is crucial here is not so much that a QR code is present, but where it leads. If you primarily want to be reachable, a digital contact page or vCard can be useful. For creative or consulting professions, a portfolio or a services page, for example, is suitable. Companies can link to a website, a shop, a booking page, or another clearly defined landing page. The clearer the purpose, the more understandable the code is for the recipient. A short hint like "Save contact," "View portfolio," or "Book appointment" immediately clarifies what happens after the scan.

For a business card with a QR code, readability should take precedence over the smallest possible display. As a practical guide, QR codes on business cards are often recommended to be around 2 x 2 cm or more; for more complex static codes, more space may be required. At the same time, the code needs a clear margin and a strong contrast to the background. How small a QR code can actually function depends, among other things, on the amount of data, print quality, surface, and structure of the code. Therefore, you should test it in original size with several smartphones before printing.

The type of QR code also plays a role. A static QR code contains the destination directly and cannot be changed after printing. If, for example, the linked URL changes, a new code must be created. With a dynamic QR code, the printed code first leads through a managed redirect. This allows the later destination to be adjusted depending on the provider, without reprinting the business cards. If your card is to be used for a longer period or if linked content changes regularly, this option can be useful. If, on the other hand, the code leads directly to permanently valid information, a static QR code is often sufficient.

Another option is a vCard in the QR code. After scanning, the name, phone number, email address, and other contact details can be directly transferred to the smartphone. This saves manual typing. However, with extensive contact data, the QR code becomes denser, which can take up more space. A slim alternative is therefore a digital contact page where the contact can be saved via a button.

For the layout, a clear separation is often suitable: personal details and logo remain easily readable, while the QR code receives its own area. The back side can be particularly practical for this, as the code can be given sufficient space without displacing other information. Official design guidelines for business cards also foresee the back side as a possible area for a QR code.

With a customizable template, you can adapt colors, fonts, logo, contact details, and the destination of your QR code to your own business. Ultimately, the small practical test remains important: display or print the template in actual size, scan the QR code from different angles, and check whether the correct page is actually opened. A nice code that only responds after five attempts has, after all, missed its purpose.
