Sign your resume: Yes or no?
When creating an application, most people pay attention to content, layout, and completeness. But there's often uncertainty about one detail: Does a resume actually need to be signed, or is that long outdated?
The confusion is not unfounded. In the past, a handwritten signature was almost a matter of course for every application folder. Today, applications are primarily sent digitally, and many documents never end up on paper. At the same time, conflicting statements can be found on the internet. Some guides still recommend a signature, while others consider it completely unnecessary.
This question is therefore relevant for many applicants. After all, nobody wants to make a formal mistake or give the impression of not knowing important standards. The good news: In most cases, there is no strict obligation. Nevertheless, a signature can be useful under certain circumstances. This article shows what matters and what expectations employers actually have today.
Table of Contents:
Is there a duty to sign?
The short answer is: No.
There is generally no legal obligation to sign a CV. Neither companies nor authorities may reject an application solely because the CV was not signed.
In practice, this means: You can send a CV without a signature without violating formal requirements.
Nevertheless, many templates still include a line for place, date, and signature. This is primarily because this design has been established over many years and is still used in some cases.
Today, the overall impression of the application is more important than the signature itself. A clear, error-free, and well-structured CV has a much greater impact than the question of whether there is a signature at the end.
Why some applicants still sign on
Even if there is no obligation, many people consciously choose to sign their CV.
There are several reasons for this:
- The application appears a little more personal.
- The information is symbolically confirmed.
- Many older application templates still require a signature.
- Some HR managers expect it out of habit.
Especially with traditional applications, a signature can convey a slightly more formal impression. However, this does not automatically mean that a signed application will be rated better.
In modern companies, especially in digital application processes, the signature often plays hardly any role. There, the focus is more on whether the information is complete, plausible, and professionally presented.
What about online applications?
Today, most applications are submitted via email or applicant portals. This has also changed the way signatures are handled.
If you send your resume as a PDF, you generally have three options:
- Do not use a signature.
- Insert a scanned handwritten signature.
- Use a digital signature.
All three options are usually acceptable.
Many applicants first sign their resume on paper, scan the signature, and then insert it into the document. This maintains the classic structure without having to print out the application.
Others forgo it entirely. This is also accepted without problems by most companies.
It is particularly important that the document appears professional. A blurry or poorly inserted signature can even be more disadvantageous than no signature at all.
Place and Date – Useful or Also Obsolete?
The question of the signature is often raised together with the place and date. Here too, there are no mandatory rules.
Nevertheless, a current date can be useful. It shows that the application was not created months ago and that the information is up-to-date.
Typically, at the end of the CV, you will find:
- Place
- Date
- Signature (optional)
An example:
Oldenburg, June 11, 2026
Especially for applications in more conservative industries, this format is still frequently used. In creative or digital professional fields, however, it is often omitted.
Ultimately, both are possible. The most important thing is to maintain a consistent style within your application.
When a signature is more advisable
There are situations where a signature may be more useful than in others.
These include, for example:
- Applications to authorities
- Applications for public service positions
- Apprenticeship applications
- Applications to traditional companies
- Applications in highly regulated industries
Here, many decision-makers still adhere more closely to classic application standards.
The situation is often different in sectors such as IT, marketing, startups, or digital companies. There, the focus is usually more on qualifications, professional experience, and skills.
If you are unsure, you generally can't go wrong with a neatly inserted signature. Similarly, omitting it is no longer a disqualifying factor today.
What you can take away for your application
The question of the signature concerns many applicants, although today it usually no longer plays a decisive role. A resume generally does not have to be signed. Those who do not sign it do not commit a formal error.
At the same time, there is nothing against including a signature if it suits the style of the application or if a more classic appearance is desired. Especially with authorities or traditional companies, it is still frequently used.
In the end, what matters much more is whether your resume is up-to-date, clear, and convincing in content. A signature can complement an application, but it does not replace clear information, comprehensible career stages, or a clean design.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does a CV still need to be signed in 2026?
No. A signature is not required and is no longer expected for many digital applications.
Is a digital signature sufficient?
Yes. A digital or scanned signature is usually accepted for online applications.
Can I send my resume without a date?
Yes. Many applicants now omit the place and date. However, an up-to-date date can show that the documents are current.
Is an application without a signature rated worse?
Normally not. Most employers pay more attention to qualifications, professional experience, and the quality of the application documents.
Where does the signature go?
If you wish to sign, this is usually done at the end of the CV, under place and date.
Does the cover letter also need to be signed?
In traditional applications, the cover letter is more frequently signed than the CV. However, in purely digital applications, many applicants choose not to include a signature.
